An Axe to Grind!

from Heroclix – Wizkids/NECA, INC by Jerome
morg
Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Today in our ongoing previews of the new Marvel Heroclix: Galactic Guardians set, we check in with a former herald of Galactus, the executioner Morg!

Morg possess both the Power Cosmic team ability, making him unoutwittable and able to ignore pushing damage, and a trait called Execution, allowing Morg to modify his attack value by +2 when attacking an adjacent character with 2 action tokens.  The Flight ability and a 5 range add mobility and fire power to Morg’s dial.

Morg begins play with Hypersonic Speed allowing him set up a good first strike.  Invulnerability will protect him from most counter attacks.  On his second click, Morg changes tactics a bit as he can use Charge with his 4 damage to engage a single foe, or use his attack special power, Axe Swipe, allowing Morg to use Quake. When he uses Quake and hits, instead of replacing his damage value, roll a d6 and subtract 2, minimum 2.  Each hit character is dealt damage equal to the result.  Toughness protects him on these two clicks of his dial.  On his third click, Morg gains Exploit Weaknessfor his next four clicks, making the damage from his close combat actions stick.

Gabe-jones-027
Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Today we continue our previews of the Marvel HeroClix: Avengers movie set as we visit WWII’s greatest military unit, the Howling Commandos and check in with Gabe Jones!

On the front half of his dial, Gabe Jones starts the game with Stealth, setting himself up in hindering terrain to keep safe, while Willpower lets him act two turns in a row without pushing.  This combination of powers works well with his damage special power, Grenade!  This special power allows Gabe Jones to be given a power action to choose a target square within 5 squares and line of fire (ignoring characters for line of fire purposes).  Make a ranged combat attack targeting all characters occupying or adjacent to the target square, then deal 2 damage to each hit character.  Wash.  Rinse.  Repeat.

The Undiscovered Country

from Heroclix – Wizkids/NECA, INC by Jerome
kronos excelsior

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Today we continue to explore the Star Trek HeroClix: Tactics set .  The first ship we visit is that of Captain Hikaru Sulu, the U.S.S. Excelsior!

The U.S.S. Excelsior begins play utilizing her 8 range and Running Shot to open it’s dial.  On her next click, the U.S.S. Excelsior engages her transwarp drive as she gains a click of Hypersonic Speed, followed by a click of Stealth.   From this point on the U.S.S. Excelsior keeps her powers for two clicks each as she cycles through Running Shot, Hypersonic Speed, and finally gains Flurry. On her attack slot, the U.S.S. Excelsior has Pulse Wave on her third click.

Defensively, the U.S.S. Excelsior starts with her deflectors engaged in the form of Invulnerability. On her second click, the U.S.S. Excelsior utilizes Willpower as she shows her captain’s resolve to stop an assassination plot.   For her next three clicks, the U.S.S. Excelsior uses her shields in the form of Toughness.  Following this are two more clicks of Willpower followed by two closing clicks ofRegeneration.

In her damage slot, the U.S.S. Excelsior starts play with Outwit, alternating with Leadership, for her first four clicks.  After this, the U.S.S. Excelsior picks up two clicks of Range Combat Expert. Before she gets to her last click, the U.S.S. Excelsior gets one more click of Outwit.   The U.S.S. Excelsior possess the Federation and Scientist keywords, and has the uncopyable Federation team ability, allowing her to increase her defense by +1 when attacked by a ship with one or more action tokens.   At 150 points, the U.S.S. Excelsior  brings a solid power set and stats to your force.

Next, we visit the flag ship of the Klingon Empire as it brings Chancellor Gorkon to Earth for peace negotiations, the I.K.S. Kronos One!

The I.K.S. Kronos One possesses a trait called Klingon Fury, allowing her or an adjacent ship with the Klingon keyword that has two action tokens to be given a non-free action.  After this action is resolved, it is dealt 1 unavoidable damage and does not clear action tokens from it at the end of the turn.  This trait couples well with the Leadership on the first two clicks of the I.K.S. Kronos One, as well as her own Indomidible ability.

Total Recall Movie Remake News

Len Wiseman Gives TOTAL RECALL Update Revealing When First Trailer Will Arrive

from GeekTyrant by Tiberius

Underworld: Awakening has been doing well at the box office this weekend. Director Len Wiseman was doing press for that film, and gave an update on his Total Recall remake in an interview with Collider (via CBM). Wiseman talked about his editing process for the remake, and revealed that he is currently working on the director’s cut – which is about two hours long. He also talked about when fans will finally see a trailer for the film, and why they will be excited.

Below is an excerpt from the interview:

Do you know when we’ll see the first trailer for Total Recall?

I’ve seen it, and it’s great. I believe it will hit in March. I could be wrong, but I think March.

Where are you at now in the editing process?

I am two days away from turning in my director’s cut. I’m actually just doing some finishing touches on it. So, I’m done with that, and the studio takes a look at it fairly soon. So far, it’s actually been a very fun process. There’s a lot of excitement around it, and I’m very happy with it.

How long is your cut at this point?

I think we’re close to two hours, but it’s not all completely assembled. We still have a lot of the visual effects shots that we’re putting in, last minute. I’ll be here for about 20 hours today, and another 20 hours tomorrow.

Is there anything that you’re most excited for fans to see?

I would say how much it really plays with fantasy versus reality, in a way that I wanted to dive into a little bit more. It’s a thing I’ve always been fascinated about with Philip K. Dick’s story and the concept itself. It really has to operate on two playing fields, at any given time. It’s either the fantasy or reality. That’s the thing that I think is the most exciting. It’s got a load of really funaction sequences and visuals, and a whole new world to experience as well, that is really fun, but what makes that all super-engaging is this constant mystery of what world we’re existing in, whether it’s his fantasy or reality.

I love remakes.  Good ones anyway.  Colin as an actor is a mixed bag for me.  He has had some good, and some bad.  Here’s to hoping this is a good one.

Welcome to the Nova Corps!

from Heroclix – Wizkids/NECA, INC by Jerome
nova corps
Greetings HeroClix fans!

Today we journey to the planet of Xandar, the home of the Nova Corps, for our first preview, the Nova Corps Recruit!

The first thing we notice about the Nova Corps Recruit is the trait he possesses, Share Through the Worldmind,  which allows friendly characters with the Nova Corps keyword to use Defend, but only on characters with a lower point value.  At 50 points, there is a good chance he we will find help to best utilize his trait.

The Nova Corps Recruit begins play using his 6 range and Running Shot to engage your opponents force.  After this initial click, the Nova Corps Recruit switches to two clicks of Phasing/Teleport,enabling him to potion better.  Toughness provides some protection from counter attacks.  Late dial, the Nova Corps Recruit picks up Energy Shield Deflection to better protect him from range attacks, and if positioned correctly to use his trait, will make him that much harder to hit.  Perplex on these two clicks will provide the Nova Corps Recruit with utility for your entire force.

The Nova Corps Recruit possesses the Nova Corps, Police, and Soldier keywords.  At 50 points, he will be an asset to all of these forces.  But where he shines best is on a Nova Corps theme team.  If a Nova Corps Recruit shows promise, he may eventually be promoted to be a Nova Corps Centurion!

The Nova Corps Centurion possesses his own version of the trait, Share Through the Worldmind, allowing friendly figure with the Nova Corps keyword to use Range Combat Expert with only a +1 modifier to their damage value.  In addition, a power action may be given to an adjacent friendly figure with the Nova Corps keyword to modify this character’s damage by +1 for this turn.

New Game Round-up: Queen & Rio Grande Unveil Packed 2012 Schedules, Ora et Labora No Mora & Nürnberg 2012 Shapes Up

from BoardGameGeek News | BoardGameGeek by W Eric Martin

by W. Eric Martin

• German publisher Queen Games has passed along details of nine titles on its 2012 schedule, and while info is scarce for a number of them, here’s what I know so far. As I receive more updates from Queen or as info comes in from the Nürnberg trade fair in early February 2012, I’ll update the various game pages to provide more details about game play.

January 2012
—–• 3 in 1: Mückenstich, Danger, Zwickern, which is – as the title suggests – a three-pack of older card games from Queen in a new package for those who weren’t around ten years ago when these games were originally released.

February 2012
—–• Kingdom Builder: Nomads, which I posted about earlier in January 2012. This expansion includes bits for a fifth player, four new game boards (and consequently four new powers), three new scoring cards, and a bunch of nomad and location tiles of which I don’t yet know the use. Soon!

March 2012
—–• Maharani, a tile-laying game from Wolfgang Panning in which players take mosaic tiles from a rondel in order to build a palace. Seems like an incredibly inefficient way to build a palace, but I have no experience doing such things, so what do I know?

April 2012
—–• Edo, which I previewed in a November 2011 post following a demo at BGG.CON.
—–• Kairo, in which you try to maneuver customers to different-colored stalls by competitors keep popping up in their way and the customers themselves keep disappearing.

May 2012
—–• Urbanization from newcomer Johnny Ebsen in which “the players follow the development of a rural area, from the beginning of the industrial revolution to modern times. They guide their villages through hard times and try to attract citizens by building houses. Later, factories are erected and the villages grow into prospering cities.”

June 2012
—–• Thebes: The Tomb Raiders, a card game version of Peter Prinz’ Thebes, with players once again spending time to dig for glory.

July 2012
—–• Escape, which I also previewed following a BGG.CON demo.

August 2012
—–

• Locomotive Werks, a fancy edition of the Winsome Games release from 2002 in which players “purchase the ability to produce engines, pay workers to produce them, and sell to the volatile, dice-driven market”.

• Jay Tummelson at Rio Grande Games has posted a general news update, mentioning that the English edition of the Puerto Rico: Anniversary Edition is sold out at the publisher level and not coming back, so what’s on the market is all there will be – at least for the English version.

• In news of upcoming games from Rio Grande, Tummelson says that Upon a Salty Ocean, Lamborghini, Leader 1: Hell of the North, Hawaii, Last Will, Stone Age: Style Is the Goal and Roll to the South Pole – a dice game from Kristian A. Østby and Eilif Svennson – will be available “in a few weeks”, which puts them as February releases on Gone Cardboard, BGG’s game release calendar. Tummelson didn’t mention that RGG is importing the Giochix release The Forgotten Planet, but the game is listed on the RGG website with a February 2012 release date, so throw that on the list, too.

Star Trek Heroclix USS Defiant and Regency I Previews

Set Course for Deep Space 9!

from Heroclix – Wizkids/NECA, INC by Jerome
regency 1 and defiant
Greetings HeroClix fans!

Today, we take a closer look at two starships with ties to the Deep Space Nine space station! First, let’s open all hailing frequencies and request permission from Captain Benjamin Sisko to board the U.S.S. Defiant!

Regarded by Starfleet Commander William Riker as a “tough little ship,” Defiant comes in at 100 points and has the Federation and Soldier keywords.  The ship has a range of eight with two targets and the Federation team ability, which allows it to boost its defense by +1 when it is attacked by a ship that already has one or more action tokens.

Defiant was built to fend off Borg attacks and is capable of reaching warp 9.2.  This speed is represented on Defiant’s dial through Running Shot on its first two clicks.  Offensively, Defiant appears unassuming but starting on its third click, it opens its primary phaser array to blast away at multiple enemy ships.  This attack is shown on Defiant’s dial as Energy Explosion.

As part of an agreement between the Federation and the Romulan Empire, Defiant was the first Federation starship equipped with a Romulan cloaking device.  This is represented defensively on Defiant’s dial as Super Senses on its opening click.

Once Defiant is off its first click, it ditches the cloaking device in favor of heavy ablative armor that allows it to withstand multiple hits from enemy ships.  This is shown as Invulnerability on Defiant’s next three clicks.  Late-dial, Defiant again changes defensive tactics and relies on its deflector shields (Energy Shield/Deflection) for protection!

Finally, the Defiant can confuse opposing ships thanks to the experience of its Executive Officer, Worf! This tactical advantage is shown on Defiant via mid-dial Perplex.

Speaking of Worf, let’s peek into the mirror universe and turn our attention to Regency 1!

Commanded by Regent Worf, Regency 1 is a Negh’Var-class flagship of the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance.  Regency 1 comes into play at 150 points and has the Flagship, Klingon, and Warrior keywords, and also has a range of nine!

Regency 1 is capable of reaching a sustained speed of warp 9.6.  This is represented on the ship’s dial via Hypersonic Speed on its first three clicks.  Mid-dial, Regency 1 switches from Hypersonic Speed and gains Running Shot.
